Le Château de Commequiers
The Commequiers castle is located 10 kms from the campsite was built in the 2nd half of the 15th century by Louis de Beaumont. This monument was subsequently dismantled in 1628 at the request of Cardinal de Richelieu. The castle of Commequiers is registered as a historical monument since 1926 and bears witness to the medieval period of Commequiers with the presence of this castle and its 8 round towers. The location of the original enclosure of the castle is still unknown but according to J-L Sarrazin it was created at the same time as the Tiffauges castle in the 11th century by the Vicomte de Thouars.
RESTORE THE CASTLE
Currently closed to the public, work is underway to restore the castle through the municipality, the departmental council of the Vendée and the association “friends of the old castle” of Commequiers who wish together to include the heritage in the project of the municipality and power, eventually, offer the possibility to the public to visit the castle.
THE MEDIEVAL
Every year, during the summer season takes place “Les Medievales”, an event organized by “friends of the old castle” that lasts a weekend where you will find animations on the theme of the Middle Ages with jousts, fights of swords, archers, festoyades, troubadours, a superb fireworks … A medieval village of artisans is also present. Everything is made for fun and by participating in this event you contribute to the project of saving the Château de Commequiers.
